Kodiak Island

Welcome to Kodiak!

First, some basic Kodiak info: Kodiak is the second largest island in the United States, located about 300 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. The island has a maritime climate warmed by the Japanese current so that the extreme cold of the Alaskan mainland is not experienced here.

Kodiak: The Town

The town of Kodiak was the first Russian settlement in Alaska and is the oldest "European" town in Alaska. The city has a settled feeling and it's nickname--"The Emerald Isle"--belies its beauty. Kodiak's major income source is the commercial fishing industry. It is the second busiest fishing city in the US.

Kodiak's People

Currently, Kodiak has a population of about 15,000 people. Most inhabitants live in the town of Kodiak or serve at the Coast Guard Base on the southeast side of the island.
